Been there, and done it. While the spacer does help, nothing works like a shroud.
I've tried everything from 160, 180, 185 degree thermostats, a remote oil cooler, retarding the timing, larger fan, extended spacer (putting the fan 3/4" from radiator), flushing/cleaning the radiator with my Boss still running hot in traffic and at an idle. Since the shroud went on, she hasn't gone over 200 degrees.
