I happened to stop at a tiny grocery store in West Virginia about 18 years ago and saw a hand written note on the messgae board for a Boss 302 engine and 1971 Maverick. The story goes that this guy bought a new green 71 Grabber and through racing it that summer blew the engine. So he ordered a Boss 302 engine and 4 speed top loader for the car from Ford, had custom headers made up and before he could it in the car, got drafted and sent to Vietnam. He got out of the service in 1980 and wanted a car for tranportation so was selling the engine and car. I bought the engine and transmission (still packed in a crate), but he was too sentimental about the car to sell it. The car was in absolutely mint condition with only 1500 miles on it and was sitting in a barn under cover. I went back a couple years later and the car was still there and was close to trading him, of all things, a 1980 AMC Hornet and some cash. I never got him to go through with the trade and have since lost track of the car. For all I know, the car may still be in his barn.

As for the Boss engine, I ran it one summer in a 1970 Mustang I had before setting it in her rightful home, a 1970 Maverick. Upon doing so, the car sat in my garage for 15 years while I went to college, moved around the country, built a house, etc... Finally, last summer I got the car put back together and painted and this year got her on the road.
