Speedo gears are no longer color coded if you buy them from ford, anyway. Stupid "bean-counter decision, I guess. The 3.50 was availible for the 8-inch (I have one), but only in the 60's. Came on Fairlanes & such. The 1974 Mustang II was availible only with the 3.55:1. Other ratios came later. Of course, only the V6 car matters because it had an 8-inch rear. If anyone needs a 3.55:1 chunk I know of one in a junkyard nearby. (Not T-L). The car is upside-down, so it wouldn't be too bad of a job. -CP

: I have 3.55s in my '73 and my city mileage did not change (it's always been bad) but the highway mileage definitely suffered a little bit. I get around 15mpg on the highway with the 302, Holley-600, stock converter, & same size tires you're using. The speedo gear for the 3.55s is a red one (they're all color-coded). Haven't seen 3.50s for the 8-inch, only for thr nine. '74 Mustang-IIs came with 3.40s and 3.55s (6-cyl. models only)to compensate for their lack of torque. One cool thing is that with these gears, I had a top speed of 125mph at 5400 RPM. No overdrive or anything...

: : The converter blew out of my Maverick, so I ordered a new one. Anyway its a little looser then stock (B&M Torkmaster 2000) that should have around 1800-2100 stall. I still run 3.00 gears with a tractionlock. would 3.50 gears work with my combination ok? And will my tractionlock wirk with the 3.50s or do I need another one for it? Its still an 8" BTW. I'm trying not to totally kill my milage which has been pretty good so far, but want a little more get up and go off the line. DOes Ford still have the correct gears for my speedometer for use with lower gears? I'm running 235-60 14s on the back with factory slots.
