Well...I can get a long block here in Austin for $500. It includes the early slotted heads. Where are you located? Send me a line.
As far as the overheating? Find some Radiator Relief, or some Water Wetter. That will help. Don't put too much antifreeze in it. Definitely flush it out. Could be some stuff clogging the channels in the heads.
Pull the thermostat out and see if it still runs hot. That should help troubleshoot the radiator. :O)
