I have rebuilt control valves before , if the ball stud comes out don't worry.You can buy the ball stud , usually the reason for it to be so brittle is because the ball stud socket is heavily worn, which I am sure is what broke on yours, that part is also available.I would try National Parts Depot and they sell both parts new as reproductions , the socket runs about $10 and the ball stud is around the same, and you can get a rebuild kit from them which includes all of the gaskets (including the ball stut boot).It has costed me about $60 for everything(some kits include a spring and two metal cups that center the ball stud, the kit is more exspensive.Determine if yours are usable) , just follow the instructions and adjustment process and you'll be fine.
