First off, a 9-inch came in that truck stock, so unless it has been changed it still is a 9-inch. 8-inches came only in Ford cars, and for the most part only intermediate cars. The 9-inch had a round back cover (like the 8-inch) from '57 to '63, and the back cover has a ridge in it for the gears from then on. Also, 57-77 rearends have middle housings like an 8-inch (very little cross bracing), while '77 and later nine-inches have thick webbing around the center of the axle housing (See the picture. The top rear is a '77 nine-inch and the bottom is a '73 eight inch. Earlier 9-inches look almost exactly like 8's from the back.) The best way to tell if it is a 9 and not an 8 is that the pinion housing on th nine-inch drops below the axle housing, or like someone said, you must use a wrench to remove the bottom bolts on a 9-inch and can use a socket on the 8-inch. -CP
: I found a 1964 Ford Pickup that supposedly has a 1967 Ford Mustang 351W. How can I determine if in fact this motor is a 67 Stang block. I'm a little suspicious because it has a two-barrel carb. Finally, how can I tell if it is a ford 9" rear. Thanks in advance!
