I have one in my 72 & it fits with no modifications. The shifter bolts directly to the tail shaft housing & the linkage is tight up against the trans. It fits with room to spare. Although not as strong as the toploader, the T10 will handle almost anything short of a full race motor. In my youth I had one in a 4000lb 63 Mercury convertable behind a 390 bored .60 & never had a problem
