If your crate motor uses a roller tappet camshaft you will need to use a steel or bronze gear on it. The steel gear will last longer than the bronze gear will. If the camshaft is a flat tappet camshaft you will need to use a cast iron gear. Make sure if you are going to just replace the gear, that you order a gear with the correct diameter hole in it for your distributor. Late model distributors for EEC-IV computer controlled engines used a different shaft diameter than the earlier point type or electronic type distributors.

Here are some ford motorsport part numbers for you:

M-12390-A Cast iron gear 0.467" Inside diameter 289/302 hydraulic flat tappet camshaft with point type or duraspark ingnitions
M-12390-B Steel gear 0.467" Inside diameter for 302 with billet steel or production roller tappet camshaft with point type or duraspark distributors.
M-12390-C Bronze gear 0.467" Inside diameter Similar aplication as above and flat tappet camshafts also.

If you are running EFI the you will have to use one of the following:

M-12390-D Cast Iron 0.532" For flat tappet camshafts
M-12390-E Bronze 0.531" For flat or roller tappet camshafts
M-12390-F Steel 0.531" for Billet steel or roller tappet camshafts

You can also get similar gears from MSD, Mallory or Crane.
