Every time I've seen that problem it was due to the controls are controlled by a multi port vacuum switch. That dash switch is hooked directly to this vacuum switch. Usually the plastic backing breaks off the switch. Most junkyard switches are in the same condition or are so brittle that they break trying to change it. I looked alot and found a NOS switch. Cost me $60 but it was worth it. I think I still have a good used one but i'd have to look for it if your interested
