: ..though they are related. Backspacing is the distance from the inside rime to the mount plate; offset is the relationship of the mounting plate to the centerline of the wheel. The wider the rim the more positive offset you will get with a given backspacing. Offset is important because it directly affects wheel bearing wear. Too much positive offset will eventually destroy your outer bearings due to the leverage placed on them during normal driving. It also increases steering effort;-)
