I would keep the car as original as possable with bolt on goodies. I like to do things that the factory did or should have done. There are nice factory wheels that you can pick up fairly cheap at swap meets, some chrome for under the hood is easy to undo, a fiberglass Grabber hood is a bolt on.
ALSO Car Craft or Hot Rod did a story some years ago and they had someone draw some "Dare to be Different cars" one was a 4 door Mav with shaved emblems and flush door handles,lowered with 18" wheels.
So it all comes down to is what you want to do with your car. Besides a four door has more room to haul all you buddies around to help pay for gas.
