:tag if still on the casing will give you the info. Ford parts can break it down, or call a reliable trans shop and they can also do it. That's how they order parts before teardown. If tag gone, guts is only other way, I know of. Call a trans shop. They may have other ways.
Okay guys, the C4 and C6 trannys are easy to tell apart, that is a given. What about the C4 and C5? Freind of mine gave me a tranny he said was a C4. I compared it to the one I took out of my Maverick, and they looked the same, no differences visible. Bought the rebuild kit and took it to a guy that came HIGHLY recomended to do the work. Turns out the tranny was a C5, which is completly useless to me as they are WEAK AS HELL!!!! I have since got another "C4" out of an '80 Granada. Everything I have read over the weekend says the C5 was only made from 82-85 so I think (hope) I'm safe. Does anyone out here in Maverick Land know how to tell difference between the C4 and C5???
