when it's, third member, already out of the car it's harder to tell.
The posi unit itself is even harder. Best method I can tell you is if the "carrier itself" is more rounded looking instead of a sloped, 45deg, carrier body. OK here's another way. Measure the pinion's bolt pattern, If it's around 5 1/2" it's a 8". If it's around 6 1/4" it's a 9". If have both types and just measured it.
: : yes there is, if you can get a 9/16" deep socket on the bottom bolts it's a 8". Also check the tag. it'll say 8 on it. Don't forget the V-6 Pintos & Mustang IIs they had them also. Don't get a 67 or older one. Thye have the weak center section.

: : : im going to look at an 8in. posi pumpkin,i need to know if the are any specific visual or measurable differances to help me determine if it is really is an 8in.posi. thanks mcmav.
: im only going to see the carrier, the guy says its an 8in posi from a 78 mustang.i need to know how to tell if its a posi, and how to tell if its an 8 or a 9in carrier. thanks, mcmav
