Sure, it's allright to change it. Be careful not to damage the cork gasket when you take the old one off, as you can re-use it. As far as changing it goes, I've found that the notches for the gas cap on early models don't match up to those on the later models. What I'm saying is that if you have a '72 and you use a filler neck from a '77, your gas cap may not be right-side-up when it's tight. It'll still work fine but will look funny. I ran into that when I wanted to put a deluxe gas cap on my '72, so if that's what you're aiming to do make sure you check all your parts for compatibility first.
