: So what is the proper way to set the valves on my 289.It has hydrolic lifters guide plates, hardened push rods and non-rail type rockers.I got it running but it just doesn't seam right .

: Assuming you are running a after market cam, I would do this: Remove valve covers and crank engine until one valve is opened as far down as it will go, the other valve is now closed and lifter is on the base circle of the cam lobe. Loosen adjusting nut and then turn push rod while tightening adj. nut down slowly. When push rod just stops turning with your fingers, turn nut down about 1/8 turn more and lock in place,(assuming you have posi locks on your rockers). If you tighten the nut adjuster to much it will cause the engine to run sluggish, especially with high lift or long duration cams. Just follow this same procedure for each cylinder. There is a set pattern to set valves, while only turning the engine over two revolutions, but this way I have explained is the easiest for most people and it keeps you from making a mess all over the engine by not having to run it.
