Shannon,
I also have a '73 originally equipped with drum brakes (now front discs). Unfortunately, this brake set up simply SUCKS and will NEVER work well. You shouldn't have to "pump the brakes" to stop however. There is obviously a leak somewhere...whether master/wheel cylinder or lines. Check the "flex" hoses as these do wear out and develop leaks. there are 3...the two for the front wheels and the most overlooked 3rd one at the rear of the car that goes from the rear axel to the rear brake line. After 27 years, it's bound to be rotten. Proportioning valves never wear out and therefore do not need to be replaced. Good luck...

: my '73 mav has the 10 inch brakes. i have replaced the master cylinder(rebuilt), brake shoes( all 4 wheels), rebuilt all 4 wheel cylinders, had the drums turned, and replaced the brake regulator (proportion) valve. i have bled the brakes 4 times and still can't get pressure. if i pump the brakes, the car will stop on a dime. if i don't, it just barely stops. i can't find a leak anywhere and every thing is put togrther right. am i missing something? thanks again!
