:Block is taller, wider and a little heavier on the M. Different intake manifold, pushrods, crank, pistons, rods, are the main difference. You can put a C-4 behind a M, but it ain't cheap. They even make one for the 429/460. same bellhousing bolt pattern.
The best of the two is the Cleveland. bearing surface size, smaller then M, better manifold selection. C-4 or C-6 trans available for it.
The quick and dirty way to tell for a complete engine on the outside? look at the dist. mounting pad. if the area behind it is about 1" high where the manifold sets it's a M, is it's low and almost flash with the dist. base where it goes thru the block, it's a C. Just like the 302 and 351W are different hieghts right there also.

Well, it's been a while since i've been here!
: I found an engine in a junkyard, it's in great shape, the guy said it doesn't burn oil or anything....but the sticker is worn off and i can't tell if it's a Cleveland (will fit in a maverick) or a Modified (won't fit in a maverick). What are some external differences, adn where else can i look to see what engine this is? (it's just sitting in the back of a Van...guy wants $100 for it, says it ran).
