:a few questions for Steamboat? what is the intended use for your car. Street driving only, 4x4, drag racing only, street/strip, USAC, etc. How much horsepwoer do you think you have and engine type? It makes allot of difference which rearend will work best for the money you have to spend.
If it's heavy racing use, both rearends' axles are useless, so the best thing is get a good set from a place like Mark Williams, the money spent on narrowing weak factory axles that were put in both rearends will be history in no time. When you narrow it you'll have to have the spring mounts, no matter what/where they are, will have to be rewelded.
So 4 or 5 lug isn't a issue for heavy racing. And you never said if you have 4 lug wheels aready, the more info the better.

I have a '73 Maverick, an '80 Versailles(does not run), and a wrecked '88 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. Does anyone know if the 8.8" rear out of the T-bird (has disc brakes and posi) will swap into a Maverick as easily as the Versaille 9"? I would go look and measure, but the Versailles and T-bird are about 100 miles away.
