Fix the rust first or you are just waisting your time. Spray Can "Primer" isn't going to cut it for a primer under good paint. It is a good idea for rust prevention while the metal is bare.
I am not saying your paint will peel or not be as glassy as possible when your done but, well you run the risk.

Anyway if you have rust showing through a door skin or body panel, check it from the inside to make sure you are just talking about surface rust. If it is rusting through fromn the inside out, fix it now before your spend the time and $$$$ on the paint job. My 2 cents. Good luck.

By the way self etching primer states is is self etching. Also, I like to use the same brand primer and paint. They tend to be chemically made for each other and I feel you get better results.
