In addition to cooler air, a scoop helps create more HP. Inches above the hood, there is actually negative air pressure (a vacuum). By moving the scoop up and out of this area, you pick up the air flow that is being deflected by the front of the car. As a result, you end up with a "forced" air induction system (ala turbo and supercharger, but without the horsepower loss connected with driving each of these)
