actually there is no trick to them, regular 289 rods are weak and the rod bolts are to small. You have to use special pistons due to the rod C to C length and the piston Comp. height. The Boss 302 and 289HiPo used the same rods but only because the Boss was a special engine and they wanted to use "on the shelf" items to get it into production.
If you want to make a 302 out of 289, just replace the crank and rods with 302 ones. 302/289 are the same pistons. The crank and rods are different. Normally you have to bore the engine anyway, so new pistons are normal.
The real trick everyone may by thinking of is the longer special 302 rods Ford sells. $550. or you can change the piston offset andpickup some power, $0 cost.
: I'm rebuilding a Falcon for a friend that doesn't have much money, can you explain a little bit more that FAMOS 302/289 trick ( conrods ) & in such case what kind of camshaft would you suggest for that 302 with 289 conrods ,the car has a 4s Manual transmision 8" rear end & he already bought a Weiand Excelerator intake manifold, a holley performer 600 & some headers ?
