it sounds like you pulled the complete steering column out. Makes it easier now. Tore my 72 Grabber column shift apart and rebuilt it with no problems. Take the column down to a mechanic's shop that has air tools and use the air hammer with a punch head on it on the steering shaft as you put pressure on the back side of the steering wheel. The air hammer while vibrate it off with the pressure from behind.
If you have start and no run are you still using the old electrical switch on the column that is operated by the key. They do go bad and will screw up your system. You should have a hot wire and ground on it. Everything else is controled in the switch. The switch also supplies power to one side of the fuse box and other parts of it are hot. Such as for the cigarette lighter. Start at the hot side of the starter solenoid and go from there.
I am STILL trying to get the steering wheel off my '71.
: Now when I pull the column, I find it isn't like any I've seen before. This one has the collapsable structure that makes the column accordian in a crash. Consequently, I find the column from the steering wheel to the gear box is in 2 pieces that slide together. This just seems to get better and better.
: This car was originally an auto with a shifter on the column and has been switched to a tranny hump shifter.
: I have to ask once again, is there something, anything, that could be holding that wheel on besides the big nut?
: Does anyone have an exploded view of the column they could scan for me?
: Now for this God awful wiring. I have the new fuse block in and all the wires connected per painless's instructions. Big Surprise. almost nothing works.
: Painless's tech support says it's all connected right. They can't figure out why it doesn't work.
: I have starter, but no run. As soon as the car fires and the key is released, the car dies.
: I have no turn signals or flashers : I have an MSD ignition and distributor which appears to be wired correctly. : This Ford wiring is insane. Somebody please tell me what the heck this resistor wire is that runs all throughout the car. : Can you tell how frustrated I am? : Sorry, I just had to vent.............................
