Ever wired a 68 Karmann Ghia? I have, and I too feel your pain. Sorry if this sounds stupid, but it actually happened to me. If the car dies as soon as you let off the key, then the ignition is wired to the starter wire, not the ignition wire. This could also happen if the switch itself is bad, or if the "painless" fuse block is incorrectly labeled. My first step would be to get a wire probe and test for hot (at the ignition) with the switch in the "on" position and in "start" position. Once you verify that you have stable current in the "on" position, then you can take a look at the ignition itself. I don't know about the MSD setup, but on a stock ignition, you can bypass all the dash wiring (for test purposes only) by running a jumper wire from the hot post on the battery straight to the hot wire on your coil. If you start it and it runs, then go back to my first suggestion... you've got ignition switch wiring problems. Of course, wasn't that what you said in the first place? :)
