Charlie, at about 30-40Mph, if you push the gas down to what would normall cause a downshift, the transmission does not seem to downshift and the engine seems to disconnect from the tranny and "race" a bit. Eventually (5-10 seconds) the transmission seems to "catch up" with the engine speed and accelerate. The only analogy I can think of is (on a manual) pushing in the clutch slightly at 30mph, adding gas and very slowly letting the clutch out until it finally re-engages.
I wonder if my downshift lever could be out of adjustment(?)
Thanks again!
: When you say "catches up," do you mean it shifts down? not sure exactly what it is doing, but before you rebuild the transmission or mess with the internals, check the Carb linkage adjustment. If you don't have good info on how to adjust it, have a good shop give it a whirl. Choose one that doesn't do internal transmission work, just to be sure. -CP
: : Hi all!
: : JUST got the inspection sticker, tires and rims for my '76 Mav, looking good! And finally street legal to boot! Anyways, I'm having a very annoying problem with the transmission.
: : When I'm doing about 30 miles an hour (+-10 mph) and give it more gas the transmission seems to "slip", the engine builds up speed and eventually the tranmission "catches up" to the new throttle setting. This is a C4 Automatic transmission. I've checked the fluid level and its right on the money. The books I have show how to do a reverse and intermediate band adjustment. Why? What does the adjustment do? They never say WHY you'd want to do it, just how. I wonder if these adjustments would help me with the problem.
: : Any advice would be appreciated!

: : P.S. I hate working on Transmissions or air conditioners, everything else is fair game for this shadetree mechanic ;^)
