:an auto trans catches up the same way a stick shifter clutch slips and the engine revs and then the car slowly catchs up with it. an auto trans the fluid is finally pumped into the clutch pack and it compresses the clutch pack enough to completely lockup. only thing is you ca only do this a few times until the clutches are history. It's a slippage thing.

When you say "catches up," do you mean it shifts down? not sure exactly what it is doing, but before you rebuild the transmission or mess with the internals, check the Carb linkage adjustment. If you don't have good info on how to adjust it, have a good shop give it a whirl. Choose one that doesn't do internal transmission work, just to be sure. -CP

: : Hi all!

: : JUST got the inspection sticker, tires and rims for my '76 Mav, looking good! And finally street legal to boot! Anyways, I'm having a very annoying problem with the transmission.

: : When I'm doing about 30 miles an hour (+-10 mph) and give it more gas the transmission seems to "slip", the engine builds up speed and eventually the tranmission "catches up" to the new throttle setting. This is a C4 Automatic transmission. I've checked the fluid level and its right on the money. The books I have show how to do a reverse and intermediate band adjustment. Why? What does the adjustment do? They never say WHY you'd want to do it, just how. I wonder if these adjustments would help me with the problem.

: : Any advice would be appreciated!

: : P.S. I hate working on Transmissions or air conditioners, everything else is fair game for this shadetree mechanic ;^)
