: Michael, Charlie hit everything pretty much on the head , so I'll just expand a little, your friendly machine shop probably has a block laying around that you cn have , if not call some in your area and they always seem to have on ethat the owner didn't have the money for, so there it sits, crank and rods you can find the same way. As for pushrods , harden steel for guide plates, and use roller rocker arms, they run better and your oil stays cooler, they'll work good with either cam.
Use an Accel Unilite mechanical advance dist and coil. very simple, good price, parts are very easy also. In may opinion, Mallory and MSD aren't the user friendly systems that Accel is.
For a trans, use the C-4, it fits already and camn be beefer up to handle anything for can do to it. AOD and T-5 are nice but have to make some changes and with the 3.50 gears you don't need either. And as for the 8", Detriot Locker in it and good rebuilt and it won't be a problem, 9" will add weight you don't ned for the horsepower you'll produce. 9" would be over kill, just not nesscary
E303 is the better cam for mild street use and daily driver, use a torque convertor one step above stock and it'll work fine.(appx2000 rpms) stall speed.
Use KB hypercydelic pistons, and AFCO aluminum raditor, keep your engine cool no matter what and go for about $185.
Next summer I hope to have a garage for the Mav. As soon as I have that garage, I want to put in a 302, Headers, dual exhaust, nice carb and intake, disk brakes all around, probably gonna go with a 3.5 Posi Rear, new suspension, ect...Basically the works, I'm gonna save up alot of cash in the next several month, pull the car apart, and spend a couple of weeks on installing stuff.
: My questions?
: What should I expect to spend on a 302. Should I just buy the block, and order a cam, pistons, rings, gaskets, water pump, oil pump, lifters, pushrods, ect....and build the engine from the ground up? I have the advantage of getting all my machine work done for free.
: Or should I buy a new engine, or get a rebuilt.
: What about Tranny's? I'd like to take out the C4, I have a bad felling that the current tranny is about dead. The pan leaks, and I'm gonna fix that before I start driving it, but I think it has been leaking for the 11 months the previous owner had it. I pured 2 quarts of tranny fluid in it just to get the stick wet. I've hurd AOD mentioned alot. I would definaly like a 5 speed if posible. Suggestions?
: My goal is to have a completely streetable daily driver that can lay down some rubber when I want it to. I'm going to try to participate in as many shows as posible, and I'll be willing to drive half way across the country for a Mav meet, once it's ready.
: I'm just trying to design the car now, from bumper to bumper. I want to put a detailed plan together, and make another plan when this coming summer, and compair the 2 and make a final out of the 2 plans, and see how much of the plan I change between now, and next summer.
