Rickyracer- I'm not insulted, but I'd like to say I'm an ASE certified mechanic, and that is my job. Lightly tapping a starter with a hammer will jar armature enough that, if it is dirty or worn, will catch and begin to turn over. A starter is just an electric motor, and the magnets sometimes don't have enough strength to spin it if the clearances are poor.
I should have mentioned LIGHT tapping, (one tap is almost always enough), because you're right, I could be leading them to another broken part -CP
: :first off put the hammer away or we can just call you a hammer mechanic. if it don't fit get a bigger hammer. or it might not be broken until you hit it a few times, then it is broken.
: check the solinoid for a good ground to the body, and check the cables and wires for condition and clamps for corrosion.
: 1. jump the positive cable to the starter relay, little wire by battery cable terminal. it turns, solinoid and starter good, ignition switch bad, it doesn't turn test starter.
: 2. take starter cable from soliniod terminal and put it to the positive of the battery. it turns, starter good, soliniod bad.
: 3. just make sure everything is tight and clean.
: I'm pretty damn frustrated at the moment. Old Faithful has decided not to start. My daily-driver Mav, which has never failed me since I've owned it and was just sold and to be delivered this weekend, won't turn over. I had to jump my truck with it earlier and I had it running while I did it. When I was done I shut the Mav off and when I went to move it later, nothing, not even clicking. I tested the battery and it reads 12.67 volts. When I hook it up to a charger or try to jump it, it makes a clicking noise like there is a loose connection. Checked all connections, all good. Tested the battery with two different voltmeters, both the same. The only thing I can think of is maybe the starter relay or possibly even the control module, but when the control module goes you usually don't even get a clicking noise, do you? Anyway, just thought I'd get some more opinions before I start buying parts. Thanks in advance. Tim
