: I have a floor shifter from a 68 Mustang, but do I mount it right above tail shaft or more towards the case of the tranny?

I installed a Ford auto floorshift into an original column shift car many years ago. This is what I remember doing. I also had the problem of just where to cut a hole. I took the floorshift linkage completely apart and then began to assemble underneath the car. Then i would shift it and get an idea of where to cut the floor. Use extreme caution working underneath a vehicle in a situtation like this. Good jackstands are a cheap life insurance and place them well. When i had a good idea where the shifter might go from underneath i drilled a hole from underneath and then went into the car and started cutting a small hole. I worked on making the hole larger bit by bit. The object is to try to get the bottom of the actual shifter to mate with the tranny linkage without cutting a huge hole in the floor or making a mess of a good tranny tunnel. If anything in a conversion like this, patience is the virtue. Good luck and I hope I have been a little help for ya!
