Paul,if the engine is a used one it could have a lot of miles on it and may be a lot of blowby the rings. This will dirty the oil quicker. Why not change oil yourself to see if there pulling any tricks? A way to look at the oil is to draw the dipstick out and let it drip on a clean white paper towel and look closely after the oil spreads to see what size the patricles are. This may tell something about what is happening if the oil goes black to soon.
The blackness doesn't always mean the oil has to be changed right away as its the unburnt hydrocarbons in suspension. If say you put in 10w 30 and it feels like #40 after 1000 miles then I would guess something's going on. Not much more I can say to help.
