Modify the front end with a Pinto/Mustang II crossmember. I say to use the Pinto and the steering collumn with the flex shaft. Never done it my self but from emails back and forth seems to be the way to go.

Yes I know these are NOT Maverick Links but the principals are exactly what needs to be done. I wish I had the time, money (doing it yourself might be pretty cheap though), room, tools, skills and guts to do some of this to my own car good luck.
