In the May 2001 issue of Mustangs and Fords, they have a really indepth article about 6 cyl motors, complete with casting numbers. According to the article, you have a 170 out of a 1968-1969 Falcon (C8DE-A, dual bolt pattern) or you have a 200 out of a 1968-1974 Compact/Intermediate (C8DE-B, Dual Bolt Pattern). In the article they talk about the small trans bolt pattern and some of the other issue you brought up.
