You need to have a test light to do any real electrical work. They are cheap and last forever. Any hardware store has 'em.

Quite often, the wire to the cigarette lighter is a battery lead. Even cars W/O the lighter should have the pigtail behind the dash. A good source for ignition power would be the wire that was already powering your radio.

If you tap into any other circuits, make sure they lead back to a good size fuse in the fuse box. Lightly fused circuits can't handle the extra load of a stereo, in many cases. Also, make sure to solder and seal with shrink tube all your cennections. They last longer that way and won't ground out against anything, blowing fuses.
