I recently replaced my exterior door handles with repro 67 Mustang ones. They are the same & fit fine once I took the latch off the old one. The new latch is too wide to fit in the hole in the door, So its just a matter of switching the old latch onto the new handle. Anyway, I put it all together & everything seemed OK. Last night I went to the store & locked my car up for the first time with the new handles. When I came out the car would not unlock. No way, no how. The key wouldn't do it. I had a wire & could hook the inside lock knobs but they would not pull up. I finally had to smash the side window. They still would not unlock. I had to crawl inside & drive it home. Postmortem inspection revealed the new handles lifted the rod that runs from the handles down to the door latch about 1/8 inch. It was just enough pressure to keep the lock rod from lifting once it was locked. There is an adjustment at the bottom of the rod. Make sure if you replace your exterior handles, Make this adjustment!!! There should be no pressure on the handle rod at all. Luckly I have plenty of spare windows but it was a very frustrating event & one hell of a mess to clean up.
