Your car is nearly 30 years old and you must remember that Mavs are not commonly pampered as much as we tend to! Most of the time they're driven into the ground and replaced.
Secondly, how long have you had this particular mechanic? Sad to say there are a LOT of unscrupulous ones out there...
How knowlegeable are you about the workings of your car? A chilton guide with it's ever helpful symptoms and causes guide is wonderful as is this message board... they've never steered me wrong.
Never be afraid of questioning the mechanic or getting a second opionion... reputable mechanics won't mind (I only have a very short list of mechanics who work on my girl).
My major problem witht his guy is that he didn't check out the "tractor" noise before pronounceing the car 'ready'... did he test drive her? Why didn't he mention it before? I would be shopping around myself.
