The heads are late 80's truck heads. I purchased them almost, two years ago, from a local machine shop for this engine. The shop said they had been rebuilt. Wasn't until later (much later), that I found out the shop had a questionable reputation (mild understatement in my opinion, and not just because of the heads).

: If you did a compression test and everything turned out fine(looks like it did), then I say your piston and rings are fine. I would turn to the cyl. head as key culprit. As other have suggested, the guide may leak.
: Did you have them replaced during the valve job? All it takes is roughly 70k miles on iron guides and they can be finished and need replacement.
: When you pull the head, look for build up on the intake valve(port side, not chamber).
