several books, one is Engine BluePrinting by SA Design, Street Power, SA Design, Musclecar & HiPo Engines Ford 289-302-Boss 302 &351W by Brookland Books, Food Windsor Small-Block Performance by HP Books.
One of the best ways I've found is to see what the manufactures have done. They spent lots of money or R & D. Boss 302 windage tray is still the best for a small block Ford. Stay away from the fancy, "trick of the week" stuff.

: I've done a lot of work on my Maverick and Comet on the body and interior, and know the brake system reasonably well. When it comes to engine work though, I don't know what I am doing. I just don't have the experience. I've thumbed through a few shop manuels, but they usually seem to assume that the user has some experience and are therefore too advanced for me. Has anyone seen a good book that introduces someone who is "not in the know" to the basics?
