It sounds like a carb problem. If it runs smooth when the choke is on than a vacuum leak would be less noticeable until you open the choke. Warm the car up and get it "running rough" and then progressively cover up the carb until it dies. With a moderate vacuum leak the car may actually run better with a partially obstructed carb. When the carb is running rough is there black smoke coming out of the tail pipe? The choke may not be opening properly. If it smokes black lean the choke "out" assuming there is such an adjustment. Just a couple of ideas. Good luck. PS-most of my experience comes from working on buicks and pontiacs so i don't know how much "transfers" to the Fords. I'm learning as i go on my Mav as well!
