If it's an original '76 302, it's probably not that hot anyhow, so make the '71 your project and do it right. I don't mean to offend anyone by saying that, but I had a 75 Grabber 302... nice car, but by that time they had detuned the 302 to well under 200 hp (I forget the exact number, but it is surprisingly low).
And about the wife... I got rid of my first one for sh*! like that, but she was a fat, ugly, lazy slob who made a hobby out of sleeping with my brother. If yours looks as good as you say, keep her and show her off around Houston in your tricked-out '71 Maverick. Of course, you probably shouldn't take marital advice from a bunch of car nuts, anyway :)
