Get your documentation together and visit a layer. Pictures, printouts of the history on the board,
a written timeline of events, and supprting statements from anyone involved.
A small consultation fee will let you know where you stand.

The courts are there for people just like you. Most states decide on a preponderence of evidence for civil cases.
Think of it this way:
If you go to court and win, you will get satisfaction even if it is small or a judgement that may never get paid.
If you loose, you have closure and can move on.
If you do nothing, you will always wonder what may have happened.

Very few people want to be in the defendants seat. The courts do not favor those
who breach contracts.

One last thing. If this person presents himself to the public as a mechanic, he is subject to
the Uniform Commercial Code. You would have much greater rights.
