I think I didn't explain the turn signal problem properly. The signal will turn off when the lever is reset to the centered position.
the lever will not reset itself as I unturn the wheel from a right turn. I have to reset it to center myself. I'm thinking that it's something mechanical inside the column that has broken. I'm guessing based on your reply that it's much easier to replace a stearing column than to repair one?

: You all ready read my post about the tranny link so IU can't offer anything else there. the Turn signal uis another matter. What you need uis a new wiuring harness that goes iunsuide the steering coluimn. after market uis about 75 bucks. go to a bone yartd and get a coluimn that wuill cost around 50 but there uis no garantee that is will work for very long.
