One other thing to think about:
He could put a lean against your car if he can show he performed more work on the car than what you have paid him for so far, as well as storage fees, etc.
Just something to think about if you get into a pissin match with him.

: I have "before" pictures and witnesses to the oral (dumb dumb dumb!!) agreement and can prove that I paid him at leat $1000 of the total.
