although 406 heads are obscure, you would have to think they are very good for performance purposes.
the 406 was a brief fix of the previous hipo 390. it had a very short run before the 427 came along.
during the cubic inch/horsepower wars of the early 60's, ford decided that the 390 galaxie needed a little something extra to be competitive with the 409 impalas.
not too many people are running the old "FE" blocks, now-a-days.
i would think you'd be better off running a 429/460.
but to answer your question, 406 heads are good. at least better than a 390, although probably very similar. most FE parts are interchangeable.
but for what is worth.. the 406 was only produced for performance purposes. you wouldnt have found one in your gramma's grocery getter.
im not positive, but i think all 406's came with 3X2V carbs.
