The balancer is visibly different and the heads are visibly different from the outside, but I can't tell you exactly how, visit some mustang websites and ask, you'll get a clearer picture. I suggest mustangsandmore.com, its a good source of info like that.

Of course, from the factory all HiPo's had a 4V, chrome vlave covers and air cleaner, and dual point distributor. These can be easily added to a regular 289 though, but the balancer is the key difference. You cannot use a HiPo balancer on a regualr 289. -CP

: without pulling it apart, casting numbers is the only way to tell.

: : Sorry to sound stupid, but how can you tell a Hi-po 289 from a generic 289? The owner is an old man who has owned the car for many years, and he doesn't really know much about it, other than that it has a locker rear. I can probably buy the whole car for a couple of hundred bucks.
