Arnold,as the other respondant have mentioned it could be a lot of things. Here is a possible place to look carfully at. Take the distributor cap off and look for an insulation problem on the condenser wire going to the pionts and any possible ground out that could occur because the whole plate that they are mounted on moves in response to varying engine vaccuum. As your engine (carries on) the vaccuum signal to the dist. will cause the plate to move. If a ground out is happening it will cut the ignition intermittantly and cause the result you discribe.
