It's very bad to put a battery with 0 volts into a cars electrical system. What you did can work if the battery is a little low but a very low battery will kill an alternator, the alternator is only designed to keep the battery at peak voltage, not to charge it from scratch. Charge up the battery you have, (it may not be any good), and once you have a charged battery put it back in your car and the ALT light will probably stay off. If not then like Tom said you might have a fuseable link blown or perhaps the voltage regualtor is toast. -CP
