Ricky hit the nail on the head as far as how to change it to a 302; but I wouldn't bother, 289s are great engines and a lot of people prefer them. if you do buy a crank and rods then you might as well get a 347 stroker kit IMHO. -CP
: as long as it's not the older 5 bolt bell housing 289, just replace the crank and rods, pistons are the same ones, so you'll probably be boring it out anyway and replacing the pistons. Buying a crank/rod/piston kit helps keep the cost down. Normally you polish the crank and replace the rodbolts. This way you get inspected crank and rods with new rod bolts to.

: : I was talking to my neighbor today and he has a 289 and heads, he said something about the heads having swedged valve something or others. I know that 289/302 are the same block, but what do I have to do to make it a 302, i dont plan on keeping these heads, but plan on getting alum. heads. Is this a good idea to do to swap into my Mav. that is currently a 250. Any advice would be appreciated.
