if the starter spins but doesn't engage the flywheel teeth it 's the Bendix. Soleniod just provides the power to the starter.
As for the "starter plate" it's actually a block spacer plate.
and you need one. Peope run without them and get away with it. But what it does is space the trans, starter, flywheel and convertor the proper distances from each other. Otherwise the starter and ringgear teeth aren't at the proper location and the trans is pulled to close to the block.

: i have a 70 mav. it has a 302 with c4 tranny. my question is should the starter have a plate between it and tranny. when i bought it there was no plate, friends said i needed it(chevy friends)so i put one on. is this right or wrong??? thanks for any help possible...
