as Russ said 302 is a 68 engine. If it is a 302, 68 engine take that one. Would rebuilt it thou, cheap insurance. 84 uses electronic ignition and different timing covers. 68 (prior to 70) small blocks also had different timing covers then 70+ small blocks because of the change in the water pump inlet, changed to drivers side, all Mavericks are the drivers side radiators. They also cool much better. Timing pionter and dampers are different to go with the year of timing cover you have. Verifty engine for sure on the Long block 302 before buying it. There is ways to tell. Just give a yell.

: I found a 67 Montego with a long block 302 and an 84 pick-up with a 302.
: I don't know what is good and do I need a short or long block? The Montego needs a timing chain and the timing cover was sold on the truck motor. Around how much to have either of these rebuilt and which is the best? $300 for the Montego motor and $400 for the truck motor.
: Thanks
: P.S. this is for my 73 mav, curently a 250 auto.
