Most of the posters on this forum will remember my BEGGING for an answer to the same problems you are having several months ago.
Nothing was working on mine. I used a GREAT puller, a can of WD40, a mallet, even a short experiment with a torch!!!!!!!!
I got the same answers you are receiving now, and all SHOULD work....BUT!
The gear puller did not budge the wheel for me UNTIL I PULLED THE COLUMN!!!!!!!
If your MAV is like my '71, they have a crash column with a built in crumple point. The steering shaft was actually two pieces. One hooks to the wheel, the other to the steering box. The two pieces just slide together.
This means when you put the gear puller on there and tap it with a hammer, you aren't really generating enough force to pop it free. NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU SMACK IT!
Believe me, that pissed me off good!
If your column is like mine, you DO NOT have to disconnect the half that is attached to the steering gear box. Only disconnect the top part Pull that portion off, and attach the gear puller to the wheel. Then hold the wheel on the floor between your feet and tap the puller. Mine came off in an instant!!!! Good luck from the land of "been there, cussed at it, kicked butt, and got the t-shirt"!
