Jason there is a reason that metal is and was not used. 1. you will hear every vibration from the rear end. 2. Trunk ventallation. Yup you could create a bomb out of your trunk if it becomes to air tight. I don't mean that air goes out from the trunk into the car but rather the other way around. the added weight is not really a big deal but I think that if you want a real clean look in your trunk then you have a few decent options that were not available when the car was built. Some of the earlier mavs didn't even have the cardboard, they have a really thing industrial roofing paper. Go to the Home depot or some place like that . There is a thin LUAN plywood that is stronger than the cardboard but not thicker. There is also a Polypropalene white plastic board that should be really good to use.
